What is an enema?

An enema is a treatment known for relieving severe constipation, but can also be used to support weight loss, remove toxins from your body, improve your skin’s appearance, regulate blood pressure and increase energy levels. The treatment involves inserting liquid or gas into the rectum and pushing waste out of the rectum when you cannot do so alone. It is a fantastic method for cleansing your body.

Why do you need an enema?

Enemas have been used for hundreds of years, helping people cleanse their bodies when waste builds up. While we don’t always realise waste piling up in our bodies leads to ailments such as fatigue and depression that can greatly impair our lives.

Generally, an enema can help you with:

  • Constipation Relief: The most common reason for administering an enema is to alleviate constipation. By introducing liquid into the colon, it softens stool and facilitates bowel movements.
  • Preparation for Medical Procedures: Enemas are also used as a preparatory measure for certain medical procedures, such as colonoscopies, to clear the colon of any remaining faecal matter.
  • Detoxification:  You can use enemas as part of the detoxification processes, as an enema helps remove the waste and, consequently, the accumulated toxins in your body
  • Improve your skin: Acne, eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis are more likely to occur when elimination channels are blocked or not working properly. Therefore, when enemas remove toxins, they also improve elimination channels, giving you healthier and cleaner skin.
  • Immunity: Enemas, such as those using probiotics or herbal solutions, are introducing bacteria or certain herbal solutions in your body that support the growth of beneficial bacteria gut flora, aiding the immune system
  • Energy levels: One of the benefits of an enema is improved oxygen distribution throughout the body, which improves cellular health. Red blood cell duplication increases when the detoxification process of the body accelerates. The body gets more oxygen and has more energy when it has more red blood cells.

What to expect from your visit

When you book an appointment with us, your clinician will assess your condition and suggest the right enema for your condition. The clinician will explain the procedure and assist you before, during and after the procedure.

The enema is quick to administer and takes a few minutes to produce bow movement. Regardless of how quickly the enema works, you should stay in the bathroom to pass the contents of their bowels for about an hour. It is advised not to eat for at least 30 minutes prior to your appointment.

When you stop passing stools of any consistency, it means that the solution has cleared out all the remaining bowel contents, which means you’re ready to head back home.

Our Different Enemas

Coffee Enema

Coffee enemas use caffeine to help the body detox. The caffeine is preferentially absorbed into this system and is transported directly to the liver. t helps the liver to produce more bile* (which contains processed toxins) and moves bile out toward the small intestine for elimination. This seems to free up the liver to process more incoming toxic materials that have accumulated in the organs, tissues and bloodstream. The coffee does not go into the systemic circulation.

Caffeine also contains some alkaloids that stimulate the production of glutathione-S-transferase, an enzyme used by the liver to make the detox pathways run. It is pivotal in the formation of more glutathione, one of the main conjugation chemicals, enabling toxins to be eliminated via bile into the small intestine*. So, in other words, a coffee enema speeds up the detoxification process and minimises the backlog of yet-to-be-detoxified substances.

Flax Oil Enema

A flaxseed enema is very useful If you cannot break down oils and utilise omega-3 fatty acids due to digestive difficulties. It can also have positive effects when treating Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

According to Dr Johanna Budwig, the electrons of highly unsaturated fats from seed oils, which lie on the same wavelength as sunlight, can draw solar energy and store it. Flaxseeds contain a high level of electron-rich unsaturated fats, making it useful to start treatments with a flaxseed enema as it helps to promote photon and electron activity within the body.  On completion, it often gives an enhanced feeling of calmness and connectedness*.

Aloe Vera Enema

An Aloe Vera enema is ideally suited to any inflammatory condition within the digestive system. Aloe Vera is a moisturiser and soother, so its presence in the enema can have an anti-inflammatory effect on the mucosa of the colon. On completion, there is often a feeling of calmness and a positive effect on the skin.

Magnesium Enema

Magnesium is used for short-term relief of constipation, but as it is also a muscle relaxant, it can help in a series of conditions, such as relieving:

  • Muscle spasm or heavy cramping following exercise (erg).
  • At the onset of a migraine, if the early symptoms are neck and shoulder tension.
  • To help relieve cramping at the onset of menstruation.

As a result of the session, patients often experience a sense of calmness within their bodies, as well as a reduction or disappearance of pains or spasms.

Chamomile Enema

Chamomile is a sedative herb which promotes relaxation in the body when taken as a tea. When taken as an enema, it is absorbed via the haemorrhoidal vein and transported to the liver via the portal blood system, leaving a calming effect on the liver and the body.

A chamomile enema will soothe an irritated intestinal tract,  can reduce abdominal cramps caused by gas or inflammation and help relieve sleeplessness. On completion of this technique, there is often a feeling of calmness, especially within the digestive system.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are enemas safe?

Enemas can be safe when administered by a professional for treating specific conditions. However, they come with many risks you should consider, especially when administered at home. Using enemas improperly can cause serious physical and chemical damage to your colon and rectum, infections, electrolyte imbalance, and dependence.

How many times can you safely use an enema?

The right dosage can be determined by a healthcare expert based on your age, medical condition, and response to treatment. Unless directed by your clinician, you should not get an enema more than once in 24 hours or for more than 3 days.

What is the difference between an enema and advanced colonic hydrotherapy?

Enemas and colonics are both methods of flushing waste from the colon via water introduced into the rectum. Both are highly effective at stimulating the colon to eliminate putrefactive waste. However the procedure and depth of the cleansing process are different.

Enemas are a little more inconvenient and involve the introduction of a smaller volume of liquid, typically water or a saline solution, into the rectum using a kit or bag with a nozzle attached. In contrast, advanced colonic hydrotherapy, also known as colonic irrigation, is a more extensive procedure which involves the use of a larger volume of warm water that is introduced into the colon through a tube inserted into the rectum. The purpose of a colonic is to thoroughly cleanse the entire length of the colon by repeatedly filling and emptying it.

The key distinction lies in the scale and depth of the cleansing process. Enemas focus on localised relief or preparation for specific medical procedures, while in contrast, advanced colonic hydrotherapy aims to cleanse the entire length of the colon.
